Built-in wardrobe

No vanity, the most appropriate result counts!

How we used a briefing through a design analysis, which also considers the context of a new development, to redefine the goals and thus put the result on the road to success.

Design briefing

How do you decide on a goal and how do you describe it?

Sure, we could have started immediately with what the customer asked us to do. Then the built-in wardrobe would now resemble a kitchen.

Instead, we came across a question during the initial briefing analysis! Why should the built-in cupboard be designed like a kitchen cupboard? It is neither ergonomically good nor does it look like a foreign body compared to the standard equipment? Why shouldn't we use the existing standard parts and develop a built-in wardrobe from them, with all their advantages? Yes, perhaps we could have satisfied our designer soul better if we had made our own design - but that would not have been to the customer's advantage.

Why not contact us for the briefing? Initial investigations can save a lot of time and clearly describe the goal for the team. In the end, it is the idea that has to bear the subsequent high investment.

The right tool at the right time!

Exactly, we industrial designers don't work with Catia.

But instead of being worried, you should recognise the advantages. Each 3D software requires its specific approach, and this limitation is often very time-consuming. We use many different tools in product development - from hand drawing to 3D software, but before we do, we consider how we can review and communicate the challenges most quickly and clearly, and which tool is the most suitable for this. We always take care not to get lost in details as long as these details are not relevant. As in this case, our tools allow us to use simple orthogonal views to check the dimensions, possibilities and ideas and put them up for discussion - without spending hours on it, because you should first decide whether this approach really works.

Don't worry, if you want you will end up with every detail in Catia, Solid Works or Creo in a dataset as required.

We see industrial design for what it is

We spent years building cross-departmental understanding. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy!

Our internal mechanical design department now understands the benefits that design processes can bring to the progress of a project. And the industrial design department has great respect for the extensive knowledge, detailed solutions and consistency shown by the colleagues. And especially with the built-in wardrobe, we were all very challenged. In the end, we managed the project as general contractor and even sent ten finished prototypes to our customer after the development work. In consultation with the customer, we took on and solved all the relevant requirements ourselves. This included the specifications required in the truck sector, and all functional areas including electronic connections, up to assembly planning away from the production line.

We were all very pleased with our part in the great success of our customer.

The result

Consistent sense of quality

The greatest success of this work is certainly the fact that, up to this point, accessories were not available in the same quality as the standard interior. That made all the difference here.

As an end customer, I expect flawless functionality, easy to understand, handy, comfortable and with features that make my life easier. However, the fact that the end customer buys an expensive truck that is of the highest quality and, due to an additional need, receives a special accessory from the same brand, that does not meet this quality, is unacceptable. It is an even greater success for the manufacturer to be able to offer this from now on.
We think it is a confirmation of our assumption because at the product launch in Spain, the individualized truck with the built-in wardrobe and exterior attachments, which we were also involved in developing, was placed in the center of the presentation - which of course made us proud to have made the right decision here not to propose our own styling ideas.

Our design with all integrated functions, including the complete in-house development of the ambient light, met all expectations - but the fact that the assembly works perfectly off the production line also characterises our detailed development.
